Buying the panel first is the wrong order. Work out what your power station can accept, then buy to fit it. Start with sizing.
The wattage on the box is a laboratory number
Panels are rated at standard test conditions: a specific light intensity, a specific spectrum, and a cell temperature of 25°C. Outdoors you get none of those at once. A panel lying flat on the ground in hazy afternoon light, warm to the touch, will commonly deliver somewhere between half and three quarters of its rating.
That is not a defect and it is not the manufacturer lying. It is the same figure every maker quotes, which is exactly why it is still useful — as a way of comparing panels against each other, not as a promise of what will reach your battery.
Three things move the number more than the panel choice does: the angle you set it at, whether any part of it is shaded, and how hot it gets. A cheap panel aimed properly beats an expensive one lying flat.
Match the panel to the station, not the other way round
Every power station has an input window — a minimum voltage before its charge controller will start, and a maximum it must never see. Exceed the ceiling and you can damage the unit. Sit below the floor and it simply will not charge, which looks identical to a broken panel.
Wiring panels in series adds their voltages; wiring them in parallel adds their current instead. That choice is how you land inside the window, and it matters more than the total wattage. Check the connector too: most portable panels use MC4 or a proprietary barrel plug, and the adapter is often not in the box.
Check the input limits before you buy. A panel that overshoots your station’s maximum voltage is not a bargain at any price.
Price per watt is the honest comparison
Across the panels here the spread runs from about $46 to about $1,100, which makes headline prices almost meaningless on their own. Divide price by rated watts and the picture flattens out fast: most portable folding panels cluster in a fairly narrow band, and the outliers are usually paying for something specific — a tougher case, a better hinge, an integrated kickstand, a longer warranty.
The manufacturer’s own panel carries a premium. Sometimes it earns it, because the connector, the voltage window and the charge profile are guaranteed to match. Where a third-party panel is materially cheaper and the specifications line up, the saving is real.
Folding, rigid or flexible
- Folding panels are the default for a power station: they pack flat, stand themselves up, and come with the right cable. They cost more per watt than rigid.
- Rigid panels are the cheapest per watt by some margin, but they are heavy, need mounting, and suit a shed, cabin or van roof rather than a weekend.
- Flexible panels curve onto a surface and weigh very little. They usually run hotter, and typically do not last as long as glass.
When the bundle is the better buy
