Bright Saver

A nonprofit selling kits at wholesale cost. Genuinely the cheapest way in, and it pays us nothing.

What it is

Bright Saver is a California nonprofit whose stated aim is bringing plug-in solar to the US. It sells kits at wholesale cost — from around $285 — funded by a $29 annual membership rather than a margin on hardware.

Disclosure, because it matters here. Bright Saver has no affiliate programme. We earn nothing if you buy from them. It is on this site because it is the cheapest route into plug-in solar and leaving it out would make our other recommendations less honest, not more.

How the membership works

You pay $29 a year, which grants access to at-cost pricing and funds their advocacy work pushing state-by-state legalisation. For a single kit purchase the membership pays for itself several times over against retail pricing.

The trade-offs

  • Nonprofit, not a retailer. Support and returns are not going to work like Amazon.
  • Limited range. You get what they have sourced, not a catalogue.
  • Availability varies. Stock and shipping depend on their buying cycles.

Who should use it

Anyone whose main constraint is price, and who is comfortable buying from an organisation rather than a shop. If you want a polished retail experience and integrated storage, Craftstrom or EcoFlow suit better.
