EcoFlow River 2 vs River 3: the newer one is the smaller one

A higher model number normally means a bigger battery. Not here. In an EcoFlow River 2 vs River 3 comparison the later unit is the smaller unit — 245Wh against 256Wh — and the two share a 300W rated AC output, a 600W surge ceiling, a 110W solar limit, LFP cells and a 3,000-cycle rating. Almost every difference between them lands below the point where you would feel it in use.

Every figure here comes from EcoFlow’s spec tables for the standalone units. Bundle listings and retailer feeds carry different numbers: there is a separate RIVER 2 (240) SKU at 240Wh, and both models also appear inside solar-generator kits priced several hundred dollars higher. Those are different products, not different accounts of the same one.

What actually differs

Three rows in that table are not identical, and none of them is large. The RIVER 2 holds 11Wh more, which works out to roughly eleven extra minutes on a 50W fridge. The RIVER 2 takes 40W more from the wall, which both units turn into the same hour-long charge. And the RIVER 3 is a tenth of a pound heavier. Everything else on the sheet matches, row for row.

The rows EcoFlow leaves blank

Warranty is published for one unit and not the other. The RIVER 2 page states a five-year term. The RIVER 3 page states no term at all and links only to the general warranty policy. That is a hole in EcoFlow’s documentation, not evidence of thinner cover — nothing on either page says the RIVER 3 is warranted for less time. If warranty length is what decides this for you, get the term from EcoFlow in writing before you order.

Expandable capacity is blank on both. Neither spec table lists an extra-battery port and neither page claims expandable capacity, but EcoFlow never states that expansion is impossible either. Treat the two the same way: plan around the capacity in the box, on both units.

Capacity and cost per watt-hour

Divide price by capacity. The RIVER 3 is $199 across 245Wh, which is $0.81 per watt-hour. The RIVER 2 is $209 across 256Wh, or $0.82. One cent apart, which is noise.

The $199 needs a caveat. That is the price the RIVER 3 page displays, and it is carried by a members-only variant bundled with a 30W charger. The plain RIVER 3 SKU is listed at $219 and is currently out of stock. At $219 the cost per watt-hour becomes $0.89, and the RIVER 2 turns into the cheaper battery on both counts — more capacity, less money. The RIVER 3’s advantage here rests entirely on which variant you can check out with on the day.

Check which RIVER 3 variant is in your cart before you compare prices. $199 buys the members-only bundle. The bare unit is a $219 listing, and at that price this comparison flips.

What either one will run

Usable energy is not nameplate energy. Figure on 85% through the inverter for AC loads and 92% for DC. That leaves the RIVER 2 with 217.6Wh of AC energy and 235.5Wh on DC, and the RIVER 3 with 208.3Wh and 225.4Wh. Dividing by the load gives the runtimes below, RIVER 2 first.

  • 50W fridge: 4.4 hours against 4.2
  • 90W TV: 2.4 hours against 2.3
  • 60W laptop: 3.6 hours against 3.5
  • 40W CPAP, run from the DC output: 5.9 hours against 5.6
  • 10W router: 21.8 hours against 20.8

The widest gap on that list is just under an hour on the router, and the router is the load nobody sizes a power station around. On the fridge the gap is eleven minutes. Neither unit will run a 1,000W microwave or a 1,500W kettle: both are rated at 300W with a 600W surge, and both of those loads sit far past it. Anything with a heating element is out of scope for this size of battery, whichever one you pick.

Charging

The RIVER 2 accepts 360W from the wall and the RIVER 3 accepts 320W, and EcoFlow publishes a 0–100% wall charge of about sixty minutes for both — the RIVER 2’s slightly larger battery absorbs its slightly larger input. Solar tops out at 110W on either unit, so one 100W panel saturates both and there is nothing to choose between them there. If you were expecting the newer model to charge faster, it does not.

Cycle life, and what a cycle costs

Both units are rated at 3,000 cycles to 80% capacity. EcoFlow prints it as “80%+ capacity after 3000 cycles” for the RIVER 2 and folds it into the chemistry row for the RIVER 3 as “LiFePO4, 3000 cycles to 80% capacity”. Same number, same retention basis, both on the maker’s own spec table.

That makes lifetime throughput straightforward. Three thousand cycles times 256Wh is 768kWh for the RIVER 2; three thousand times 245Wh is 735kWh for the RIVER 3. Set those against $209 and $199 and both land on 27 cents per kilowatt-hour cycled. That is nameplate throughput rather than delivered energy — you pay the same conversion overhead on both — but as a way of separating these two it fails as completely as everything else has. They cost the same to own per unit of energy moved.

Which one to buy

Buy whichever is cheaper and in stock. At $199 the RIVER 3 is the pick: fractionally lower cost per watt-hour and the current model, which usually means a longer tail of firmware and accessory support. If only the $219 variant is available, buy the RIVER 2 at $209 — more capacity, less money, and a warranty term you can actually read. Ten dollars and eleven watt-hours are not worth waiting on a restock for.
