There are only about four real decisions in buying an electric trike, and most of the specification sheet is noise around them: how much battery, how wide, does it fold, and does it need to handle loose ground. Get those right and the rest follows.

How these are worked out. Usable battery divided by energy used per mile. They are not manufacturer claims. A maker’s headline range is normally measured on flat tarmac, by a light rider, on the lowest assist setting, with no cargo — which is why it rarely survives a real week. Use the middle column for planning and the right-hand one if you ride hills or carry a load.

The five checks that decide whether it gets ridden
- Step-over height. The lowest number you can find. If you have to lift a leg over a frame tube, the trike has already failed at the thing you bought it for.
- Can you move it with the power off? Push it round a corner and up a kerb before you commit. A 90 lb machine you cannot reposition by hand is a machine that lives wherever it was last left.
- Is the battery removable? Carrying a pack indoors to charge is far easier than running an extension lead to wherever the trike is stored, and it keeps the cells warm in winter, which measurably extends their life.
- Will it physically fit? Most adult trikes are 31–34 inches across the rear axle. Measure the gate, the shed door and the hallway. This is the single most common reason a trike gets sold on.
- Can you sit on the seat for an hour? Most ship with a wide saddle and no backrest. Budget for a backrest from the start rather than discovering you need one.
Three things that surprise every new trike rider
- You steer it, you do not lean it. On a bicycle you countersteer and lean without thinking about it. A trike does neither. Take the corner slowly and turn the bars — and be aware that a delta trike taken quickly into a tight turn will lift its inside rear wheel.
- Road camber pulls you toward the kerb. Roads are built to shed water, so they slope. A bike leans a degree or two and ignores it. A trike follows the slope and you hold a light, constant pressure against it. It becomes automatic within a week, but the first ride is a surprise.
- The throttle is more useful than you expect. Getting three wheels and 90 lb moving from a standstill on an incline is genuinely hard work. This is why nearly every electric trike is Class 2 rather than Class 1.

On published specification and current list price, not on ride impressions, because we have not ridden every trike here and pretending otherwise would make the whole page worthless. Cost per watt-hour is calculated from each maker’s own battery figure against their own price. Where a maker does not publish a number, the cell is left empty rather than estimated — an invented spec is worse than a missing one.
Common questions
Who makes the best electric trike?
No single maker wins outright at this price. The sensible approach is to decide which constraint binds — storage, loose ground, or distance — and buy the machine built around it. Brand matters far less than battery size and fit.
Are electric trikes safe?
They remove the risk that ends most cycling careers — falling over at a standstill or when pulling away — and they add a different one, which is lifting an inside wheel in a fast corner. Net, for a rider with any balance concern, a trike is considerably safer. For a confident cyclist on fast roads it is not. Width in traffic is the other real factor: a trike takes most of a bike lane.
Are electric trikes street legal?
In most of the United States an electric trike is regulated exactly as an electric bicycle, under the same three-class system. Almost all are Class 2 — throttle permitted, assist cutting out at 20 mph — which can normally be ridden on roads, in bike lanes and on most shared paths. State and local rules vary and park trail rules often differ from road rules, so confirm locally.
How far will one actually go on a charge?
Divide the battery in watt-hours by roughly 30 for a realistic figure on mixed ground. A 700 Wh pack is about 23 real miles. Manufacturer claims are typically measured flat, light and on minimum assist.
How do you transport an electric trike?
Not on a standard bike rack — the rear axle is too wide and most racks are rated well below trike weight. Options are a folding model, a hitch-mounted platform carrier rated for the weight, or an estate car or van with the front wheel off. Check this before buying, not after.
How long does the battery last?
Three to five years of regular use before capacity drops noticeably. Charging to about 80% for daily use, avoiding leaving it fully flat, and storing it indoors in winter all extend that meaningfully.
