The short answer
If you are buying a power station to keep, buy LiFePO4. It lasts several times longer, tolerates heat far better, and is markedly safer. Nearly every unit worth owning has already switched.
What the letters mean
Both are lithium batteries. The difference is the cathode chemistry. NMC (nickel manganese cobalt) is the older approach: more energy in less weight and volume. LiFePO4 (lithium iron phosphate) trades some of that density for dramatically better longevity and thermal stability.
Cycle life is the headline

A cycle is one full charge and discharge. At 500 cycles, a daily-use NMC pack is meaningfully degraded inside two years. A LiFePO4 pack at 3,000 cycles is still going after eight.
What degradation actually looks like. Batteries do not stop working, they shrink. A pack rated for 80% capacity at end of life still runs, it just holds less. The question is whether that happens in year two or year ten.
When NMC still makes sense
Where weight is the binding constraint. Drones, e-bikes, laptops and phones all use NMC because carrying the extra mass of LiFePO4 would ruin the product. For a power station that sits on a floor, that trade makes no sense.
The cold-weather caveat
Neither chemistry likes being charged below freezing, and LiFePO4 is arguably worse for it. Good units include low-temperature charge protection that simply refuses to charge until the pack warms. Check for it if the station will live in a van or an unheated garage.
Watch the wording. “Lithium” on a spec sheet tells you nothing — both chemistries are lithium. Look specifically for LiFePO4 or LFP. If a listing avoids naming the chemistry, assume NMC.
What this means for buying
Every station we cover on this site uses LiFePO4, which reflects where the market has landed rather than a filter we applied. Where you still see NMC is in older stock and very cheap units — and that is usually why they are cheap.
