A 256Wh battery that does three jobs very well and almost everything else badly.

The EcoFlow River 2 is a 256Wh battery with a 300W inverter that weighs 7.7 lb and refills from empty in about an hour. It runs laptops, routers, CPAP machines and lights through a night. It will not run a refrigerator, a kettle or a space heater. The 600W printed on the box is the number that causes the trouble, and it is not a second inverter rating.

This unit sits at the bottom of EcoFlow’s range, and most of the disappointment attached to it comes from buyers who read the output figure as a capability rather than a ceiling. Sized honestly, it is one of the more useful small batteries on the market. Sized optimistically, it is a $200 device-charger that someone bought expecting outage backup.

Who the EcoFlow River 2 is for

256 watt-hours is roughly the energy in a large laptop battery multiplied by three. That framing is more useful than the wattage figure, because it tells you immediately which category of problem this solves.

There are three jobs it does genuinely well, and they are worth naming precisely:

  • A weekend of small devices away from power. Phones, headlamps, a camera, a tablet, a laptop for an evening. Two nights of that is comfortably inside 256Wh.
  • One night of a CPAP machine with the humidifier off. This is the single most common reason people buy this size, and it is a good fit — see the runtime table below for the arithmetic.
  • A desk-side buffer for a router, modem and a small network switch. The AC outlets have a fast switchover, so a brief cut does not drop the connection.

It is also the right answer for a car camping fridge on the 12V port, for field charging on a photography or drone job, and for a market stall running a card reader and a couple of lights.

Do not buy this for household outage backup. 256Wh will not carry a refrigerator, and the 300W inverter will not start one. If a power cut is the reason you are shopping, you are in the wrong bracket entirely — the sizing guide works out which one you actually need, and it is usually four to eight times this capacity.

On the numbers. Capacity and output are manufacturer specifications. Expect 80–90% of rated capacity in real use after inverter losses, and less in cold weather.

Two capacities are in circulation. EcoFlow’s product overview states 256Wh, which is the figure on almost every retail listing and the one we use throughout this page. EcoFlow’s own US store also carries a listing named “RIVER 2 (240)” specified at 243Wh, with identical output, weight, dimensions and charge time. Check the capacity printed on the listing you are actually buying from; the difference is about 5%, which is small but real.

Two entries in that table deserve attention before you go further. The LiFePO4 chemistry with a 3,000-cycle rating is the reason this unit is still worth owning in five years — it is the same chemistry EcoFlow uses in batteries ten times the size, and it is the main thing separating this generation from the older lithium-ion power banks it replaced. The 5-year warranty on a unit at this price is unusually long and matches what EcoFlow puts on its large home units.

The second is the absence of expansion. There is no extra battery for this model and no parallel connection. Whatever you buy is what you have, permanently. On larger EcoFlow units that is not true, and it changes how much a mistake costs you.

X-Boost, and why 600W is the most misread number

EcoFlow lists two separate 600W figures on this unit, and buyers routinely merge them into one imaginary capability.

The first is surge. That is momentary headroom — a fraction of a second of tolerance while a motor or compressor spins up. It is not a load rating, and nothing runs at 600W on the strength of it.

The second is X-Boost. This is EcoFlow’s method for running an appliance rated above 300W without tripping the inverter: it reduces the output voltage so the appliance draws less current, and therefore less power, than its label says. A 600W device does start. It simply does not do 600W of work.

Three consequences follow, and all three matter:

  • A heating appliance runs slower, not the same. A 500W hot plate on X-Boost heats at roughly the rate the reduced voltage allows. The food still cooks; it takes longer, and the energy still comes out of the same 256Wh.
  • It does not work on anything with a control board or a motor. Reduced voltage upsets switching power supplies, brushless motors, compressors and anything with precise timing. EcoFlow scopes X-Boost to resistive loads for good reason. Turn it off before plugging in electronics.
  • It creates no energy. This is the part people miss. If you genuinely pulled 600W from a 256Wh pack, allowing for inverter losses, you would get about 22 minutes. X-Boost solves a “will it turn on” problem. It does not solve a “will it run” problem, and on a battery this small the second problem is the one you have.

Realistic runtimes at 256Wh

The table below assumes 85% of rated capacity delivered through the AC inverter, which gives about 218Wh of usable AC energy from a 256Wh pack. Loads are typical measured draws for each device class, not label ratings. Nothing else is connected.

The CPAP row is highlighted because it is the reason most of these units get bought, and because the gap between the two CPAP rows is the whole decision. With the heated humidifier switched off, one River 2 covers a full night with margin. Switch the humidifier on and you get about two hours, which is worse than useless — the machine stops mid-sleep. If you need humidification on battery, this is not the unit.

Two rows deserve a note. The 12V camping fridge figure is better than the AC equivalent because the car port skips the inverter entirely, which saves the conversion loss; running a DC fridge on DC is always the right call. Treat everything in the table as an upper bound. Below about 40°F, LiFePO4 gives up usable capacity, and the unit will refuse to charge at all below freezing. A battery a few hundred cycles into its life delivers slightly less than a new one. Charging: 60 minutes from the wall, 110W from solar

The 60-minute AC recharge is the most genuinely impressive specification on this unit, and unlike the output figures it means exactly what it says. EcoFlow rates AC input at 360W, which fills 256Wh from empty inside an hour. In practical terms it means the unit does not need planning — you top it up while you pack.

Solar is where the constraint bites. Maximum solar input is 110W within an 11–30V window at up to 8A. That is a hard ceiling: a larger array does not charge it faster, and a panel whose open-circuit voltage sits outside the window will not charge it at all. Match it with a 100W or 110W panel and expect roughly three hours of good sun for a full charge, longer in anything less than direct overhead conditions.

Two other inputs exist. The 12V car socket delivers 100W and fills the unit in about three hours of driving, which suits road trips well. The USB-C port is bidirectional at 60W, so a laptop charger will slowly refill it — useful in a hotel room, slow everywhere else.

Fast charging is not free. Pushing 360W into a 256Wh pack is a high rate, and heat is what ages cells. If you are not in a hurry, charging from solar or USB-C runs cooler and is the gentler option over a five-year ownership period.

The AC outlets carry an EPS function with a switchover under 30 ms. That is fast enough to keep a router, a modem or a desktop through a brief cut, but EPS is not the same as a true online UPS — there is a real, if short, break in supply. For equipment that genuinely cannot tolerate any interruption, this is the wrong tool.

What it cannot do

This section matters more than the specification table, because almost every bad review of this unit is a description of someone using it for something in this list.

Anything with a heating element is out. Kettles, coffee makers, toasters, microwaves, hair dryers, induction hobs and space heaters all sit between 800W and 1,800W. X-Boost will start some of them at reduced output; none of them will do their job, and a 1,500W heater would drain the whole pack in under ten minutes even if the inverter allowed it.

A full-size refrigerator is out on both counts. The compressor start surge on a modern fridge runs to 600–1,200W, which the 300W inverter will not reliably supply, and even if it started, 256Wh covers roughly four hours of average fridge draw. Both numbers are wrong by a wide margin.

Air conditioning of any kind is out. Even the smallest portable units start above 1,000W.

Corded power tools are out. Circular saws, angle grinders and drills with universal motors draw well past 300W and surge much higher. Charging their batteries from the River 2 is entirely reasonable and is the sensible way to use it on a job site.

Three softer limitations are worth knowing before you buy:

  • The USB-C port is 60W. A 14-inch or 16-inch laptop that expects 96W or more will charge, but at a reduced rate, and slowly if you are also using it.
  • There is no expansion. No extra battery, no parallel pairing. If you outgrow it, you replace it.
  • Two AC outlets is the limit. With six output ports in total, this is not a unit for running a campsite.

Two other EcoFlow units come up constantly against this one, and they answer completely different questions.

The River 3 is the successor, and on paper it is the better device. It gives up 11Wh of capacity — about 4%, which is inside the noise — and gains a 100W USB-C port, a 126W car port and a faster switchover. The 100W USB-C is the one that changes daily use, because it charges a modern laptop at close to full rate rather than trickling. If both are on sale at similar money, take the River 3. The River 2 is worth buying when it is meaningfully cheaper, which it often is as older stock clears.

The Delta 2 is not a competitor; it is a different category. Four times the capacity, six times the continuous output, expandable to 3kWh, and it will start and hold a household refrigerator. It weighs about 27 lb rather than 7.7, and it takes 500W of solar rather than 110W. If you started this page wanting outage backup, the Delta 2 bracket is where you should be looking, not this one. One thing that does not vary across all three: the LiFePO4 chemistry and the 3,000-cycle rating. Buying the small one does not mean buying a worse battery, only a smaller one.

The verdict

The River 2 is a well-built small battery held back almost entirely by how it is marketed. The hardware is honest — LiFePO4 cells with a 3,000-cycle rating, a 5-year warranty, a genuinely one-hour recharge and a weight low enough that you actually carry it rather than leave it in the car. At 7.7 lb it does the thing a power station is supposed to do and a home battery cannot.

What it is not is a backup power supply, and no amount of X-Boost changes that. If your list of loads includes a compressor, a heating element or a motor, this unit is the wrong purchase and a larger one is not merely better but necessary. If your list is phones, lights, a laptop, a router and a CPAP without humidification, it is close to ideal and the extra capacity of a bigger unit is weight you carry for nothing.

The one caution specific to this model rather than to its size is the absence of expansion. Buy it slightly larger than you think you need, or accept that outgrowing it means replacing it. How long will the EcoFlow River 2 run a CPAP machine?

About seven hours with the heated humidifier switched off, which covers a full night. With the humidifier on, expect roughly two hours, because humidification typically triples the draw. If you need heated humidification on battery power, you need a unit of at least 700Wh, not this one.

Can the EcoFlow River 2 run a refrigerator?

Not a full-size one. A modern refrigerator surges to 600–1,200W when the compressor starts, which the 300W inverter will not reliably supply, and 256Wh only covers about four hours of average fridge draw even if it did start. Can I use the EcoFlow River 2 as a UPS for a computer?

For a router, modem or small desktop, yes — the AC outlets switch over in under 30 ms, fast enough that most equipment does not notice. EcoFlow calls this EPS rather than UPS, and the distinction is real: there is a brief genuine break in supply. Equipment that tolerates no interruption at all needs a true online UPS.

What size solar panel do I need for the EcoFlow River 2?

A 100W or 110W panel. Maximum solar input is 110W within an 11–30V window at 8A, so a larger array is wasted and a panel outside that voltage range will not charge it at all. Full charge takes about three hours in strong direct sun and considerably longer in anything less.

How many phone charges do you get from a River 2?

About 12 full charges for a typical modern smartphone, allowing for conversion losses.
