⚡ Find the Best Battery, Solar Kit, E-Bike or Generator  ·  Capacity, output and cost per watt-hour, side by side

The honest verdict

Below roughly 2,000Wh, building your own is usually not worth it. Off-the-shelf units have come down enough that the parts alone often cost as much, and you give up the enclosure, the app, the warranty and the safety certification.

Above that — and especially for permanent installs in a cabin or van — DIY starts to win clearly on cost per watt-hour and on flexibility.

What you actually need

The BMS and the fusing are the safety layer. A large lithium battery without proper protection and correctly rated fusing is genuinely dangerous. If that sentence makes you uneasy, buy a finished unit — that is the right decision, not a failure.

Where DIY genuinely wins

  • Large capacity. Beyond 3–4kWh the price gap widens sharply in DIY’s favour.
  • Permanent installs. A van or cabin system does not need a carry handle or a screen.
  • Odd requirements. Unusual voltages, specific charging sources, integration with an existing setup.
  • Repairability. You can replace one component instead of the whole unit.

Where buying wins

  • Portability. Nobody builds a nicer 1,000Wh carry-handle box than the factory.
  • Warranty and support. Worth real money when something fails.
  • Time. A build is a weekend or three.
  • Resale. A finished unit sells; a homemade box does not.

The middle path most people should take

Buy a finished station and add panels separately. You get the safety and convenience of a manufactured unit with the flexibility to choose your own array, which is where most of the DIY saving actually was.
